Healthy Weight Range129 - 174 lbs
BMI Range18.5 - 24.9
A healthy weight range is the span of weights that places your BMI in the normal zone of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. This calculator takes your height and returns the lower and upper weight bounds in pounds, giving you a target band rather than a single ideal number. Because it is BMI-based, it reflects population health guidance and does not account for muscle mass or body composition.
Formula
Weight range (kg) = 18.5 × height(m)² to 24.9 × height(m)²
- height
- Standing height in metres (inches × 2.54 ÷ 100)
- 18.5
- Lower normal-BMI threshold
- 24.9
- Upper normal-BMI threshold
How it works
- Enter your height in inches; the tool converts it to metres (inches × 2.54, then ÷ 100).
- It computes the weight at the lower healthy BMI (18.5 × height²) and the upper healthy BMI (24.9 × height²) in kilograms.
- Both bounds are converted to pounds (× 2.20462) and shown as your healthy weight range, alongside the underlying BMI range of 18.5–24.9.
Worked example
Someone 5 ft 10 in (70 in) tall finds their healthy weight band.
- Height = 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm = 1.778 m; height² = 3.1613 m².
- Lower = 18.5 × 3.1613 = 58.48 kg → 58.48 × 2.20462 ≈ 128.9 lb.
- Upper = 24.9 × 3.1613 = 78.72 kg → 78.72 × 2.20462 ≈ 173.5 lb.
Healthy weight range ≈ 129 to 174 lb (BMI 18.5–24.9).
Frequently asked questions
- How is the healthy weight range determined?
- It is derived from the normal BMI band of 18.5 to 24.9. The calculator multiplies each threshold by your height in metres squared, then converts to pounds, giving the lightest and heaviest weights that keep BMI in the normal zone.
- Does this account for muscle or body type?
- No. Like BMI itself, the range depends only on height, so very muscular people may sit above the band while still being lean. A body-fat estimate gives a fuller picture of composition.
- Is being inside the range a guarantee of good health?
- Not on its own. The range is a useful screening guide, but overall health also depends on fitness, diet, fat distribution, and other factors that a single weight band cannot capture.
- Why is my whole range so wide?
- The normal BMI band spans 18.5 to 24.9, a range of more than six BMI points, so for any given height the corresponding healthy weights cover roughly 40–50 pounds.
