Human Equivalent Age36 years
This cat age calculator converts a cat's age in calendar years into an approximate human-equivalent age. Cats mature very quickly in their first two years and then age more steadily, so a flat "multiply by seven" rule does not fit. The calculator uses the widely cited veterinary mapping: the first year counts as 15 human years, the second adds 9, and every year after that adds 4.
Formula
age ≤ 1: 15×age; 1 < age ≤ 2: 15 + 9×(age−1); age > 2: 24 + 4×(age−2)
- age
- Cat's age in calendar years
- 15 / 9 / 4
- Human years credited for the first year, second year, and each later year
How it works
- Enter your cat's age in years (fractions such as 0.5 for six months are allowed).
- For the first year the human age is the cat age times 15; up to two years it is 15 plus 9 for the part of the second year.
- From age two onward it is 24 human years plus 4 for each additional cat year, and the result is rounded to one decimal place.
Worked example
How old is a 3-year-old cat in human years?
- The cat is older than 2, so use 24 + 4 × (age − 2).
- Years beyond two: 3 − 2 = 1.
- 24 + 4 × 1 = 28 human years.
A 3-year-old cat is about 28 in human years.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the first year worth 15 human years?
- Kittens grow up fast. By the end of their first year a cat has reached the rough developmental stage of a 15-year-old human, which is why the first year carries the most weight.
- Is the old "multiply by seven" rule accurate for cats?
- No. The seven-times rule is a myth that ignores how front-loaded feline aging is. This calculator uses the standard 15 / 9 / then 4-per-year mapping recommended by veterinary sources.
- Does breed or lifestyle affect a cat's real age?
- Yes. Indoor cats generally live longer than outdoor cats, and some breeds age differently. This formula gives a population average, not a prediction for an individual animal.
- How is a cat older than two converted?
- After two years the cat is treated as 24 in human terms, and every additional calendar year adds four human years. So a 5-year-old cat is 24 + 4 × 3 = 36.
